What is contemporary art?
Contemporary art can ideally be defined as art that is presented through modern artmaking of artists living today. Contemporary art refers to many different meanings but in reality, denotes itself to being a culturally diverse, technologically advancing, and versatile movement that works with untraditional mediums and processes to present art in the present day. This movement is not structured into an exact time period but predominately represents the modern and present life of the art world. Contemporary art began by associating with postmodernism after the 1970’s near the movements of abstract expressionism and pop art. Although it’s involvement with other art movements is obvious, it does not necessarily mean that Contemporary art has distanced itself from the past or artmaking altogether but in reality, has adapted it’s relationship with the art world into a newer, more modern context of human culture. With Contemporary art being highly dependable on advancing technologies and innovation, it can be clearly identified as a result of people, relationships, culture, and geography through human expression. In simple terms, Contemporary art is artistic innovation and originality explored in different practices that result in aesthetically challenging art; primarily, it is the changing artistic movement of our current day.
